2012 brought with it a long list of quad-core smartphone announcements with higher resolutions, leaving the phones of 2011 sounding obsolete. Samsung Galaxy S2, the top Android smartphone on the market, however continues to sell well even with all the announcements at MWC 2012. So the question that will inevitably be asked is – should you buy a Samsung Galaxy S2 as well despite its age?
The Samsung Galaxy S2 was announced in May and was available in international markets shortly after, making Galaxy S2 almost reach the 1 year mark. This also means that is successor, the Samsung Galaxy S3, is very close to launching, and will be the one Android smartphone that will no doubt make you think twice about investing in an S2.
Is it too late to buy an S2 given that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is almost here?
Last year’s roll out schedule by US carriers show that even if the Samsung Galaxy S3 is announced next month, it may take up to 6 months before the US variants hit the market, i.e. this fall. And with other new Galaxy devices like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus boasting a better CPU than the S2 but a far worse GPU, the S2 may be able to hold its ground pretty well until the S3 hits shelves.
Also, tests have proved that quad-core smartphones are not necessarily more powerful than dual-core variants even with the extra cores. The quad-core hype should definitely not dissuade you just yet.
If you are upgrading your Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a sound choice. The Samsung Galaxy S2 won the best smartphone of the year award at MWC 2012, beating out its key competitor the iPhone, and so far looks unchallenged.
