Sony wants to patent multiple keypad design, maybe for the next Xperia PlayStation phone

Announced with much fanfare more than a year ago as the first PlayStation-certified smartphone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play didn’t have the success its maker had expected. That’s likely because its technical specs aren’t overwhelming at all (as fans who’ve wanted a PSP phone for years have dreamed they’d be). Still, the Xperia Play remains an interesting smartphone. And probably that’s why Sony has several ideas on how to improve it.
We’ve discovered a patent application filed on October 2010 (just a few months before the Xperia Play was introduced), which details a touchscreen smartphone that has two sliding keypads – one including a QWERTY keyboard, and another one featuring a gamepad. Apparently, Sony thinks this could be a killer device among users who “prefer traditional keypads having press-buttons for some operations, such as text operations or video game control.”

The idea behind this patent is simple: there are two overlapped keypads, and you just slide-out the one you need, when you need it. Of course, it’s hard to imagine that a handset with such a construction would be on the thin side. Also, there doesn’t seem to be a huge demand for physical QWERTY keyboards lately – at least not when you have a large display with a good software keyboard. But maybe – just maybe – Sony will want to try its luck with a new PlayStation phone someday, and this could be the main idea behind it.

Sony Pulls Two PSP Games From PSN To Stop Vita Hacking

Sony has wasted no time pulling a couple of games from its PSN store, which could have been used to preform hacks on its new PS Vita gaming console.

The two games which have been pulled from the store are MotorStorm Arctic Rift and Hot Shots Tennis, named Everybody’s Tennis within European countries.

The exploit in question allows users to run unsigned code on the Vita in “PSP mode,” enabling hackers to carry out homebrew programming using the system’s PSP emulation.

At this moment its not know if Sony is currently working on a patch to roll out to make the games available once again or has just pulled them indefinitely from the store. A hack of the PS Vita mobile gaming console is eventually bound to happen at some point, but at the moment Sony is keeping a close watch over its new portable console.

Sony PlayStation games on HTC soon

Sony PlayStation games – previously only available on Sony Ericsson mobiles – could soon be coming to other platforms, with HTC first in line. The announcement, leaked by an insider, could come officially atMobile World Congress later this month.

The Sony certification program is a cross-platform genius-idea that means Android smartphones and tablets could soon have access to PlayStation branded classics like Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider or even Uncharted.

First in line for PlayStation certification is HTC – and between its Beats Audio-toting smartphones and quad-core Tegra 3 Endeavour handset, it could give even the PS Vita a run for its money. Will Apple ever get on board with Sony’s scheme? Seems unlikely at this stage, but if it wants to compete it might need to start thinking about playing with the other kids at the sandpit soon.

PS3 4.10 Update Adds Faster Web Browsing

Sony has rolled out a new update to its PS3 console this week v4.10. Which brings with it a number of new minor changes together with faster web browsing. The PS3 4.10 update has made a number of alterations to the PS3 browser with “improved display speed.” and will now display some pages that it previously could not.

The update is also rolling out the name change we have been expecting and a few new terms and conditions which you will need to accept. Sony explains:

“First off, once you download the new system software, you will be asked to accept a change to our Terms of Service. In an effort for more unity between PlayStation Network (PSN) and other Sony Entertainment Network services, your “PSN Account” will now be named “Sony Entertainment Network Account.”

Please note that this change is one in name only and will not change the PSN that you know and love. You’ll still play games online, still have access to the latest downloadable games and add-ons, and still experience a wide variety of movies, sports and music across PSN.”

Max Payne 3 arrives on Xbox, PS3 May 15th, PC May 29th

We know that some gamers out there might be a bit sore or put off to hear that Max Payne was delayed until May, but here’s the good news – it seems that May could really be the launch date and will not see anymore delays as Take-Two has outed specific release dates for the game during a recent earnings report. For those who own Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Sony’s PlayStation 3, you guys are in luck as the game will be seeing a release come 15th of May.

However to those who prefer gaming on their PCs, it would seem that the PC version of Max Payne 3 will only be seeing a release on the 29th of May, a good two weeks later, which we guess could be construed as some form of a “mini delay”. Either way the extra two weeks really isn’t that big of a deal, right? Assuming that Take-Two is definitely keeping to schedule this time round, the 15th and 29th of May are both dates that Max Payne 3 hopefuls will want to note down in their calendars. In the meantime pop on over to the official Max Payne 3 website for more details of the upcoming game

Sony appoints Kazuo Hirai CEO, Stringer takes chairman role

Sony Corporation on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai as CEO and company president, replacing Howard Stringer, who is currently President and CEO. Hirai will assume his new position on April 1st and Stringer will take a new role on the company’s board of directors as its chairman starting in June. ”Kaz is a globally focused executive for whom technology and the cloud are familiar territory, content is highly valued, and digital transformation is second nature,” Stringer said in a statement. “I believe his tough-mindedness and leadership skills will be of great benefit to the company and its customers in the months and years ahead.” Hirai acknowledged that Sony faces serious challenges and he pointed to digital imaging, mobile and gaming as the three key businesses that will carry Sony into the future. The company’s full press release follows below.
Sony names Kazuo Hirai as President and CEO; Sir Howard Stringer to become Chairman of the Board of Directors
TOKYO, Japan – Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that Kazuo Hirai has been appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2012. Sir Howard Stringer, currently Chairman, CEO and President, will become Chairman of the Board of Directors in June, 2012. Mr. Stringer recommended to the Sony Board of Directors that Mr. Hirai, currently Executive Deputy President, be his successor as President and CEO. Mr. Stringer will continue as Chairman of Sony Corporation until his ascension to the Board Chairmanship, which will become effective upon Board approval following the annual meeting of shareholders in June, when the current Chairman, Yotaro Kobayashi, will retire. Mr. Hirai is also expected to be appointed to the Board at the June shareholders meeting.
Comment from Sir Howard Stringer
“Three years ago, I started to work with the Board on succession plans, and in February, 2009 we named a new generation of leaders to be my management team. Among them was Kaz Hirai, who had distinguished himself through his work in the PlayStation ® and networked entertainment businesses. Kaz is a globally focused executive for whom technology and the cloud are familiar territory, content is highly valued, and digital transformation is second nature. I believe his tough-mindedness and leadership skills will be of great benefit to the company and its customers in the months and years ahead. I look forward to helping Kaz in every way I can so that succession leads inevitably to success. It was my honor to recommend him to the Board for the positions of President and CEO, because he is ready to lead, and the time to make this change is now.”
Comment from Kazuo Hirai
“As challenging as times are for Sony now, were it not for the strong leadership of Sir Howard Stringer these past seven years, we would have been in a much more difficult position. I am grateful to Sir Howard and to the Board for their confidence in me, and I look forward to working with everyone at Sony more closely than ever before to build a strong future for our customers, shareholders, partners and employees. The path we must take is clear: to drive the growth of our core electronics businesses – primarily digital imaging, smart mobile and game; to turn around the television business; and to accelerate the innovation that enables us to create new business domains. The foundations are now firmly in place for the new management team and me to fully leverage Sony’s diverse electronics product portfolio, in conjunction with our rich entertainment assets and growing array of networked services, to engage with our customers around the world in
new and exciting ways.”
Comment from Yotaro Kobayashi, Chairman of the Board
“The Board is grateful to Sir Howard Stringer for all he has done to help Sony travel such a long and vital way down the road from an analogue to a digital company. He has clearly recognized the importance of connecting our tremendous products with networks and content so that our devices come fully alive in the hands of consumers. We agree with Sir Howard that Kazuo Hirai is the right man at the right time to lead Sony. He has a unique capacity to inspire people, to build teams, to make the tough decisions, and to think with clarity and foresight about the challenges we face and how to surmount them. We are also pleased that Sir Howard has accepted our request to remain with Sony after June as Chairman of the Board of Directors. His leadership and experience will be
of immeasurable assistance to us all.”

PS4 and Xbox 720 not likely for 2012

Sony and Microsoft were reportedly set to go head to head at the E3 games expo this June, with the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 both purported to be given débuts at the LA based show, but a couple of French directors from the companies have dampened rumours that the consoles would launch this year.

First up is a comment from Microsoft France's marketing director Cedrick Delmas, who told website LePoint.fr: "There will be nothing new in 2012".

"We are in an industry where it talks a lot, it likes to tell stories," he said. "I'm not convinced that things are happening this year. The cycle of the Xbox 360 is far from over. The proof we are not at all parties on the logic of price drop this year. Then what will happen at E3, it is still premature. What is certain is that there will be nothing new in 2012."

Microsoft famously beat Sony to the seventh generation console punch back in the last decade with the Xbox 360 getting a head start on the PS3. A start that led to a lead it has never let slip. However, it was Nintendo who won the war with sales of the Wii far eclipsing Sony and Microsoft's efforts.

And with the Wii U all set to launch in 2012 you might think the two companies were concerned about playing second and third fiddle again.

Not so though, according to Delmas. "We're not here to counter Nintendo and they're not here to fight the other manufacturers," he said. "Nintendo has put itself in a different cycle, it's going forward to its own rhythm, with success as we have seen with the Wii, and now it's their turn to present their innovation."

Sony France CEO Philippe Cardon also spoke with LePoint, stating: "The Wii is under time pressure because it's in decline. As far as we're concerned, we're under a lot less pressure. We were the last to release the PS3. We will probably be the last to announce something."

Despite the claims if there's not at least a teaser about new hardware from both Sony and Microsoft at E3 in June, we'll eat our control pad. Our six year-old control pad.

PlayStation Vita Pre-Order Package Gets More Extras

Still thinking twice whether to put that order on Sony’s 3G/WiFi PlayStation Vita? The company decided to add more to the pre-order package worth $350.

To lure more buyers, Sony is adding a 4GB memory card, a copy of Little Deviants and 250MB data from AT&T. There’s also a free PlayStation Network game after you activate the Vita’s 3G service.

The sweetened deal isn’t exclusive to those pre-ordering as a similar package is also available to those who will buy it on launch day. If you pick one up on launch day, you get the PSN game, same free data and an 8GB memory card at a price of $300, making it all the more attractive for prospective buyers.

The pre-order is currently available on Amazon and it’s still unclear if other vendors will get the same add-ons.

PlayStation Vita launch titles priced up for the UK

Sony has priced up the 25 launch titles that it hopes will set the PlayStation Vita off with a boom come February - with games priced between £24.99 and £44.99.

Some of the more interesting launch titles are; Uncharted: Golden Abyss (£44.99), ModNation Racers: Road Trip (£34.99), Everybody’s Golf (£34.99), WipEout 2048 (£34.99), Unit 13 (£34.99) and Reality Fighters (£24.99).

The Japanese company has also priced the memory card options; £17.99, £31.99 or £44.99 depending on your choice of 4, 8 or 16GB, as well as giving cost details for the various accessories that you'll no doubt not bear to live without. Don't even think about going on holiday without the Travel Kit, for example, which will set you back £25.99.

The PS Vita will go on sale in the UK, Europe and the US on 22 February. The new console will be available for £229.99 for the Wi-Fi model and £279.99 for the 3G/Wi-Fi model.

The handheld machine recently went on sale in Japan and over 300,000 were snapped up in the first 2 days of availability. However, the launch has been plagued with complaints of apparent technical glitches from early adopters.

Over 300,000 PlayStation Vita units sold at launch

Previously we reported that Sony’s latest gaming console, the PlayStation Vita failed to sell out during its launch weekend last week. If you’re wondering how many were sold, we’ve got some figures for you. According to Sony, they’ve managed to sell 321,400 devices during the weekend that the console was launched – not even half of the manufactured 700,000 units that were expected to fly off the shelves.
However, not all is lost as it is only taking into account two days of sales in Japan alone. Hopefully all the problems discovered at launch will be fixed in time for the worldwide rollout of the PlayStation Vita next year – then we’ll get a more accurate representation of how well the console is doing. By then, a lot more games should be out to entice more consumers into picking up the Vita as well.

Sony PlayStation Vita pre-orders sell out in Japan

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House recently said that pre-orders for the company’s brand new portable gaming console, the PlayStation Vita, have sold out in Japan ahead of its December 17th launch. “I’m pretty confident… that there will not be major challenges in meeting demand, even though there may be short-term,” House explained to reporters recently. As the Associated Press points out, a successful launch in Japan could help soften the blow of Sony’s predicted fourth consecutive annual loss. The PlayStation Vita was originally announced during E3 2011 and we were impressed with the gaming performance during our early look at the device. The Vita will launch in the United States on February 22nd for $249.99, and a second version compatible with AT&T 3G will be released at a later date for an additional $50.

Xbox 360 crushes PlayStation 3, Wii in November sales

Sales of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 video game console trounced the competition in November, nearly doubling PlayStation 3 sales and sales of Nintendo’s Wii console. According to November sales data from leading market research firm The NPD Group, Microsoft sold 1.7 million Xbox 360 consoles in November. While Sony managed unit sales growth of about 70% year-over-year, the company only sold about 900,000 PlayStation 3 consoles last month. Nintendo sold 860,000 Wii consoles, 795,000 portable Nintendo 3DS consoles and 350,000 older Nintendo DS units in November. “This is the fourth consecutive month in which the Xbox 360 has been the top selling hardware system,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement. “The gap between 360 sales and sales of the next best selling platform was the largest we’ve seen since December 2008 when the Nintendo DS was the top selling system.” Total industry sales were up less than 1% to $3.00 billion in November according to NPD, and hardware sales dipped 9% from 2010 to $982.4 million. Software sales were up 15% year-over-year to $1.67 billion but accessory sales dropped 34% to $273.8 million despite strong holiday sales of Microsoft’s Kinect controller. The NPD Group’s list of the 10 best-selling video game titles in November follows below.

PlayStation Vita supports multiple PSN accounts…with multiple memory cards

If you’re annoyed about having to purchase Sony’s proprietary memory cards for the PlayStation Vita you’re going to be even more annoyed if you choose to purchase games using different regional accounts: it has been confirmed that each memory card can only be tied to one online account. So this means that one Vita will be able to handle multiple accounts – just that if you plan to use a different account, you’ll have to use a different memory card.
So if you plan to purchase games from multiple regions – be prepared to invest in extra memory cards. Sure, you can change the current account that’s on the memory card – but you’ll need to run it through a factory reset first. Ouch. I guess for now, the best thing we can hope for is for game publishers to ensure that their games are released worldwide, to prevent this expensive inconvenience. Despite the machine’s powerful specs and solid line up of games, these little quirks of the PlayStation Vita could spell a deal breaker for some people. What do you think of this one card-one account policy?
