BlackBerry App World Reaches 3 Billion Downloads

Blackberyy makes the neat little landmark i.e. 3 Billion app have been downloaded from the blackberry app world. The company has taken to its Inside BlackBerry blog to commemorate the occasion, saying it busts the myth that there aren't enough apps for RIM's smartphones and PlayBook tablet.
The three billion total has been reached in 1,172 days, which averages out at 2.5 million a day.
However, the news RIM will be most pleased is the increased download activity, with the first billion downloads taking four times longer than the third.
The app store also now has over 90,000 apps for download which is a pretty small figure when you take into account theWindows Marketplace which hit 100,000 apps last month and it’s been around for a shorter time period.

And of course the 3 billion downloads is nothing compared to Apple’s 25 billion or Google’s 20 billion – but it does show that there are enough apps on the BlackBerry App World to generate that many downloads so it’s not too bad. However, if RIM doesn’t bring its A-game to the table (especially in the US) with BlackBerry 10, you can be pretty sure that people aren’t going to stick around long enough to increase that download counter significantly.

RIM drops the 16GB PlayBook, 32 and 64GB versions survive the chop

RIM has been having very public issues lately, and it seems this has steamrolled into their tablet, PlayBook, getting one of its models discontinued. Research in Motion have cut the 16GB model, as it will be removed from inventory lists after the current stock held by retailer's is gone.

A RIM spokesperson said that the company:

Remains committed to the tablet space and the 32GB and 64GB models of the BlackBerry PlayBook continue to be available from our distributors and retailers around the world.

RIM's tablet has been having issues, not getting even close to Apple's iPad in terms of numbers. For every PlayBook, 19 iPads are shipped. That must hurt, real bad.

Nokia “smokes” BlackBerry users in new Amazing Everyday video challenge

Nokia wants you to use the “Smarter Apps” of their Lumia Windows Phone line, and in the tradition of past Windows Phone challenges has released a video showing of a demonstration representative challenging some BlackBerry users to see who can check in via FourSquare more rapidly.
The video is more light-hearted than the “Smoked by Windows” campaign earlier this year, and includes a magic trick as well as free Lumia’s for the participants in the challenge. Like the Smoked by Windows commercials, the video focuses on the benefits of being able to pin apps to the Live Tiles, which in this case lets the user check in in a couple of short taps.

Blackberry announces it Blackberry Bold 9900 for Russia

While many are awaiting the release of BlackBerry 10 devices, there are still parts of the world where BlackBerry 7 smartphones have yet to land. RIM's current flagship device, theBlackBerry Bold 9900 has made its way into Russia. However, if you're a consumer wanting to get hold of the device you're out of luck as this launch sees it only available to business customers on the Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) and Vimpelcom carriers.

EXCLUSIVE BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha hands-on

RIM made an unprecedented move earlier this week when it gave away pre-production BlackBerry 10 hardware to developers, but it was a smart one. In order to develop for a brand new operating system and help grow develop support for a new platform, you need to be able to test on real hardware. Since this isn’t the phone that RIM will launch in the fall, there’s no issue letting the public see the hardware, right? Well, there’s more to the story.


   

The BlackBerry 10 Alpha unit is a device RIM has been testing internally for quite some time. In fact, our sources have confirmed that it’s the BlackBerry Colt handset that RIM originally planned to ship as its first BlackBerry 10 smartphone, which was later canceled.

This is just another insight into how disorganized RIM is — looking at the phone, you can clearly see how much time, effort and money RIM put into it. It’s pre-production, but this is a phone that is set up for the company to ship. It’s manufactured very well, feels good, and has way too many details for this to just be something RIM made to give away to its developer base.

The display is beautiful, and the unit is literally a smaller PlayBook. I have also been told that Mike Lazaridis and other RIM executives have been showing BlackBerry 10 off to partners using this exact device over the past few months — another sign that this was indeed in the running to be RIM’s first real touchscreen device.Via BGR

RIM launches its BlackBerry 10 OS with Some Interesting New Features

BlackBerry 10 Launched at BlaBerry World 2012 to fight with the Android and Apple.
BlackBerry 10 looks great and promises a lot.The software keyboard has clearly been given plenty of attention, but considering RIM's messaging heritage we expected as much – especially with physical keyboards on their way out. BB10 also introduces flick gestures, for example for selecting words thrown up by the text autocomplete feature.
As with the PlayBook 2.0 OS, BB10 will also support Android apps and will be the most developer-friendly BlackBerry OS to date backed by apps created with HTML5, Air Flash and CSS. Hurray for devs!
The new RIM seems to have identified its flaws and is working to change that in BB10. While Thorstein seems to genuinely think BB10 will save RIM and the BlackBerry brand, we can't help but feel the company is now extremely late to the modern mobile party. Just ask Windows Phone how it's doing. It's not doing great. It'll take a miracle to turn around BlackBerry. It also doesn't help that RIM is the one behind the "Wake Up" flashmob that popped up at an Apple Store in Sydney.

Facebook for BlackBerry updated to 3.0.0.17

Another day, another Facebook for BlackBerry update. Looks like bugs are getting sorted out in this release, as the previous one was the big jump to version 3.0.
Facebook for BlackBerry recently got a visual overhaul with improved compatibility for some of the newest Facebook features: better BBM Connect integration, including sharing a specific post to a BBM contact; an improved interface and UI with easier access to Privacy Settings; improved Facebook Message notifications, including those that haven’t been pushed to the device, based on usage.

Airtel launches new unlimited 3G plan for its BlackBerry postpaid users

Bharti Airtel has launched new 3G plan for its BlackBerry post-paid users that will cost an additional Rs 299 apart from their standard BBM plan charges. The plan will offer 1GB of free 3G data on off-device data usage (when your BlackBerry device is used as a modem) and unlimited Internet browsing at 3G speeds on your BlackBerry smartphone. Please note that this particular offer is only available for Airtel post-paid users who have subscribed for the following BlackBerry plans – Rs 599 plan (retail users), Rs 399 plan (business users) or for Rs 899 plan (BlackBerry Enterprise and Retail users).

Trend Micro calls BlackBerry 7 the most secure OS for the enterprise, iOS close behind

RIM’s BlackBerry 7 is the most enterprise-friendly and secure mobile operating system, according to Trend Micro. The security company compared all four major smartphone platforms, including iOS 5, Android 2.3, Windows Phone Mango and BlackBerry 7, and found that despite losing of its security edge when connected to the consumer-facing BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), the company’s Enterprise Service (BES) is still top-notch.
Though it is being supplanted by Mobile Fusion, which is a cross-platform solution for BlackBerry, iOS and Android, BES is still considered the most secure directive with “corporate-grade security and manageability make this platform the option of choice for the most stringent mobile roles.”
The firm found that iOS is inherently secure due to a sandboxed method of app isolation, so malware cannot infect the whole system if it gets inside a single app. But Apple’s IT-based shortcomings lie in its user-based need to acknowledge individual policies as opposed to RIM’s method of burrowing in and taking hold of the entire OS.
As for Android, while Ice Cream Sandwich is considerably more secure than its Gingerbread predecessor, considering only 2% of the current user base is on the newest OS Trend Micro found it to be untenable as a long-term solution until more users have it. As a result, it evaluated the OS on the vast majority of Android phones, Gingerbread, and found that there are multiple security holes that have not been plugged on a manufacturer or carrier basis. And while users must acknowledge the permissions for each app, there is plenty of chance for negative app interaction, which poses a security risk for users who are not careful of what they download.
Trend Micro acknowledges the push towards Bring Your Own Devices in a corporate setting, and sets the stage for iOS to take a more prominent role in the IT marketplace, as BlackBerry usage continues to shrink despite its increased security potential. That hasn’t stopped the Canadian or US government from increasing its order of BlackBerry devices, though.

BlackBerry: Washington's Top Smartphone

Research in Motion’s BlackBerry operating system has gone from being a leading smartphone platform to the struggling OS it is today. While adoption rates may be slowing with consumers and businesses, the same cannot be said for U.S. Government workers, a new report claims. The Washington Post on Tuesday reported that nearly half a million federal workers, including President Barack Obama, are still using BlackBerry phones. That number hasn’t dipped over the past few years despite RIM’s plummeting sales. “We appreciate RIM’s focus on security, which is paramount for government use,” said Casey Coleman, chief information officer at the General Services Administration. Some agencies are changing their policies and allowing workers to choose other smartphones, however, which may impact BlackBerry’s government market share moving forward. Coleman added that other platforms are proving equally secure, and that the GSA places “a priority on adoption where appropriate of innovative new technologies.”

Twitter For BlackBerry Gets Updated

Twitter has updated their mobile app for RIM’s BlackBerry devices, the latest version is Twitter 3.0 for BlackBerry and it comes with a range of new features and bug fixes.
Twitter 3.0 for BlackBerry will work with devices running BlackBerry OS 5.0 and above, and it now offers integration with BBM, and you can now share tweets as BBM personal messages.



Twitter for BlackBerry makes it easier to share links to web pages directly from the browser. When you tweet a link it will automatically be shortened so it takes up fewer characters. And, you can upload photos to Twitter (pic.twitter.com) right from your device’s camera or when writing your Tweets.

BlackBerry Curve 9220 specs detailed

RIM isn’t feeling too good lately, but that won’t stop it from readying the launch of new devices. And one of the company’s upcoming devices is the BlackBerry Curve 9220.
As its name suggests, the Curve 9220 is an entry level smartphone. A simulator for it has been released by RIM, which means the handset itself should be officially announced pretty soon.
Feature-wise, the 9220 offers a 2.44 inch QVGA display, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GSM / GPRS / EDGE connectivity, 512MB of RAM, 512MB of internal memory, MicroSD card support, and a 2MP rear camera. Those who want the 9220 device simulator can get it here at RIM.

According to previous rumors, the BlackBerry Curve 9220 should become available in mid-2102, running Blackberry OS 7.1.

RIM slashes prices across Blackberry smartphones in India

We are hearing from our sources that RIM has slashed prices across its BlackBerry smartphone range as much as 26 percent. The price cut has taken effect in India right now and we are told it could be a global price cut. RIM is expected to announce its quarterly results on Thursday and analysts are expecting RIM to miss its own targets.
RIM is also expected to launch, its new BlackBerry Curve 9220 and 9320 in India next month. We have reached out to RIM India for an official statement on the same and will update this post as soon as we hear from them.
Update: So now BlackBerry has officially communicated to us that this price cut is for India only. The following are the new prices for BlackBerry handsets.
