Skype 5.8 For Mac Delivers Better Mobile Video Calls, Group Screen Sharing, Mountain Lion Support

Skype has just pushed out its latest update for Mac OS X, which includes a number of enhancements to existing features, as well as support for OS X Mountain Lion. The company promises that contacts lists, video calls to mobile devices, and screen sharing are all much-improved in version 5.8.
Skype has finally realized that the full-screen user interface it introduced in 5.0 isn’t for everyone, and has now reintroduced the “slim” contacts list, so that users can reposition and resize their contacts as they wish.
Video calls to mobile devices have also been enhanced:

When you’re talking with someone who is using Skype for iPhone, Skype for iPad or Skype for Android and that person rotates their mobile device from portrait to landscape (or the other way around), Skype for Mac will now detect this and automatically re-orient the video call. If you’ve held or plan to hold a video call with someone who is using Skype for Windows Phone, the same auto-rotation feature is already supported.

Screen sharing is also now possible with multiple people, and you also have the ability to stream video as well as photos. “The latest Mac release will simultaneously display your live video alongside your photos, so your friends can also see you and you can see their reactions,” Skype says.
Finally, Skype is now fully compatible Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion release next month, so you won’t need to worry about losing your Skype functionality when you upgrade.

Update: Android 2.3.4 is available for LG Optimus

Days after the LG Optimus Black launched on TELUS subsidiary Koodo with Gingerbread, its parent’s version is also sharing the Android 2.3.4 love.
The phone launched last summer with Android 2.2, and the 4-inch Skype-enabled smartphone has taken nearly ten months to receive an update to an operating system that debuted in 2010.
Cheekiness aside, this will be a very notable upgrade for Optimus Black users, bringing many speed improvements and design upgrades to the phone. Most notably, users can expect better battery life and the ability to back up settings to the cloud with a Google account.
LG has promised an update to Android 4.0 for the Optimus Black which will start in Q2 of this year. Whether it will take TELUS months longer to bring it to its version is anyone’s guess.
Upgrading to Gingerbread is a little more complicated than a traditional OTA update. You have to install LG’s PC Suite which is only compatible with Windows, and then head to the company’s support page to download the update.

Skype 4.0 is released for Apple Products

New version of Skype 4.0 is released for iPhone and iPad which contains the features Like improved stability and accessibility, as well as updated contacts and messages for iPad users in particular.
Company says The new Skype works on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad and iPod touch, according to the developers. Skype 4.0 requires iOS version 4.3 or above
The auto-restart function promises that the app will automatically restart after an unexpected shutdown. That’s an interesting and unique feature that I haven’t seen in any other iOS apps, but would definitely come in handy so you can hop back on a voice or video call as fast as possible.

Skype 4.0 is a universal app for both the iPhone and iPad. The app is free and available in the App Store.

Skype reveals the IP addresses Of Users I Thier Contact Information

IP address of users are exploited by Skype reveals the IP addresses of the users in their contact information while they are online.
Essentially, all a person has to do is start the process of adding a contact with a specific user name. Instead of sending a contact confirmation, the person can click on the information card to obtain the IP address of that particular user.

The process only works if the other user is online. The only method of protecting against this is to log off of Skype when you're not using it, or ot use a virtual private network to hide the IP address

This method could be used to find out a Skype user's country and city, along which ISP he or she is using. It could also be used by hackers to go after a particular PC. However, it only seems to work if a Skype user is online at the time. We have contacted Skype for comment on this exploit and if they have plans to fix it

Skype 5.6 for Mac released

Great news for Skype users on Mac computers – Skype has announced the release of a new update for its VoIP client. The update brings Skype up to version 5.6 and introduces a bunch of new features such as: automatic updates (you no longer have to manually update Skype), improved UI for group video calling (you now have dynamic and non-dynamic mode – dynamic mode automatically moves the portrait of whoever’s speaking to the top of the screen), a new full screen mode in OS X Lion, the ability to delete conversations and the ability to disable Audio Gain Control.

Skype for Windows offers Group Screen Sharing

You know, video conferences are no longer something as simple as sitting in front of your webcam, while making sure you do not get up from your seat because you do not want to be caught in a situation where your colleagues see you as wearing only half a suit. Skype has been a game changer where live video conferences are concerned, aided by the ever faster bandwidth which we enjoy these days, of course. One of the latest features of Skype for Windows (version 5.8) would be the introduction of the Group Screen Sharing feature – where as its name suggests, you can now share your photos and presentations with your contacts in a video conversation.

This sharing process will work in a presentation with up to 10 people. max, and Group Screen Sharing is available only with Skype Premium. Of course, when you have Skype Premium, it would also mean lumping together Group video calling and live chat customer support. Anyone out there in an enterprise situation who is mulling over the idea of upgrading the office’s machines to cater for Skype for Windows 5.8 now?

Skype 5.5 Beta For Mac Released With Improved User Interface And Incoming Calls

Mac users using Skype might be interested to learn a new Skype 5.5 beta release has been released  for Mac this week. Which brings with it an updated user interface design, together with the ability to accept incoming video calls, with or without video.

The new Mac Skype beta features now also allow, improved discoverability of Skype’s Calls, enabling Mac users to easily mute their microphone, send video, share their screen, send files and even add more people during a call, explains Skype.

Skype is still coming to Windows Phone as an app first with integration following

We've heard this before, numerous times. But to reiterate (and to beat the dead horse some more), Skype is coming to Windows Phone. The service will arrive as an app "soon" (we're joining others that point at a possible Mobile World Congress 2012 release?), and full integration with Microsoft's mobile platform will follow with the Apollo update. Although we were previously promised a "late 2011" release, it seems things have been delayed slightly.
Mobile.se threw some reader questions to Microsoft, one surrounding Skype integration. A translation of the question and answer:

"Reader: When will Skype for Windows Phone? You own course, Skype, so it
ought to be easy to answer. Will there be an app or an implementation of
operatvsystemet?
Microsoft: Hi, Skype is under development and it will be in the form of an
app to begin with. There is no launch date set yet."

Flying home for the holidays and navigating through crowded airports — or facing flight delays, as is often the case — may be a hair less dreadful this year. Skype announced recently that it is sponsoring free Wi-Fi in more than 60 U.S. airports from December 21st until December 27th. While Skype calls and text messages will be free, Skype’s press release suggests that you’ll need to use credit to surf the web. To activate the service, simply follow these directions:

1. Sign in to Skype.
2. Go to Tools > Options… > Skype WiFi Access.
3. Tick Enable Skype WiFi Access.
4. Connect to a WiFi public hotspot.
5. In the Skype menu bar, click Tools > Skype WiFi Access.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and join a compatible public WiFi network.
