AT&T announces the New shared data plan

AT&T announces the New shared data plans for iPhone, iPad and other devices AT&T Mobility said in a statement included in the announcement:
Today we think of people’s smartphones and tablets sharing a bucket of data. But in the future we’ll see health care monitors, connected cars, security systems and other devices in the home all connected to the mobile Internet. Our Mobile Share plans are simple, easy and a great value for individuals or families with multiple mobile Internet devices.”

Depending on what you currently pay for data, and how many devices you have in your household, it could indeed be a better value than traditional per-device plans. However, the new plans are still far from really simple -- rather than a flat rate for a bucket of data, once you've picked the size of your data bucket, you then have to pay an additional fee per device. The bigger your data bucket, the lower your per smartphone fee, but dumbphones, computers, and tablets each have a static per-device fee. Phew.
Here's how AT&T breaks them down:



So let's say you have a family of 4 with 2 iPhone, 2 iPads, 2 messenger phones for the kids, and a data stick for a MacBook, and you're light data users, here's your math (turns Calculator.app sideways...):
$120 for 10GB + ($30 x 2 smartphones) + ($30 x 2 dumbphones) + ($20 x 1 laptop) + ($10 x 2 tablets) = $320 a month

If you're a single geek with an iPhone, Android phone, iPad, you'll tether off your other devices, and you're a heavy data user, here's your math:
$200 for 20GB + ($30 x 2 smartphones) + ($10 x 1 tablets) = $270 a month.

Again, not simple, but also again, it could add up to considerable savings over current, separate plans.

Here's another key bit:
Current customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension. There are no changes to AT&T’s device upgrade policy, which means customers eligible to upgrade to AT&T’s best device price are not required to switch plans. The new plans will also be available for business customers.

So AT&T won't force anyone off their existing plan and onto a shared plan, nor will they strip anyone's legacy "unlimited" plan.

AT&T of Samsung Galaxy SIII Will Arrive on June 25th

We are hearing that number of carriers delaying Samsung Galaxy S III now AT&T also joins the others as Phones are expected to arrive no later than June 25th. Customers who place new pre-orders for the Galaxy S III can expect delivery within about 10 business days, depending on availability of the phone. AT&T blames the delay on manufacturer supply constraints. AT&T didn't say when it expects to fully launch the Galaxy S III. Sprint also delayed the launch of the Galaxy S III due to supply constraints. T-Mobile has a limited supply of the phone available starting today.

Finally AT&T's Sony Xperia ion Will Be Out On June 24 for $99.99

After long five months of wait AT&T reveals the Sony Xperia ion and reveals that it will be out on June 24 for $99.99. So in exactly ten days from now. The phone will even be quite affordable, going for just $99.99 with a new two-year contract, which is half of what high-end devices are usually sold for. Perhaps Sony and AT&T feel like that will somehow make up for the incredibly long waiting period in between announcement and release of the Ion.

Which has been a bit odd, especially since the smartphone has made its way to Taiwan and Hong Kong, and was even announced in France before finally arriving at AT&T, the carrier that was supposed to sell it exclusively. Things have changed since January, but the good news is that the Ion is just a few days out now. So if you’d like your Android smartphone to be a Sony, and need a high-end unit on contract, this is pretty much going to be your only choice.

Verizon and AT&T Opt Out of 50GB Dropbox space for Samsung’s Galaxy S3

Earlier while the launch the samsung galaxy sIII , they say the phone will come with 50GB of free Dropbox storage for 2 years. But now the news comes from Dropbox itself, which states that "select carriers have opted out of the promotion" and "Verizon and AT&T are among these carriers not participating."

The promotion, available internationally, adds 48GB to Dropbox's regular 2GB free allowance and runs for the length of an average contract. The deal doubles that offered by HTC's One series, which adds 23GB to boost storage to 25GB. Neither Verizon nor AT&T has commented on Dropbox's announcement yet

Update for AT&T Nokia 900 fixes the Purple screen issues

It's been a little less than two months that we've had AT&T's Nokia Lumia 900 in our lives, and a lot has transpired in that time. Success stories were greeted with praise, while the various issues and defects were met with scorn. Well, Nokia is trying to do right by its customers and has begun rolling out a new software update for the AT&T version of its flagship starting now. Fortunately the Conversations by Nokia blog post has provided a changelog for this relatively minor update:

• Removes purple hue which affected the screen of some devices in low light conditions
• Improved sensitivity for the proximity sensor
• Other minor adjustments and enhancements

As always, you know the drill. Fire up Zune or the Mac Connector, connect your device, and hop into the Device settings and click on Check for Updates. The idea is certainly an attractive one for carriers as it makes it more likely that they will gain mobile broadband customers. For some devices, they will also probably gain new two-year contracts in the process. That’s particularly true for devices that carriers subsidize and offer at lower price points as they do mobile phones. 

President of emerging devices, in an interview at CTIA Wireless. And the carrier is talking with manufacturers about making their product lines consistently equipped for 3G or 4G, he said.

"All devices should have all capabilities built in from the beginning," Lurie said. One reason that hasn't become a reality is that the additional hardware has been too expensive in the past, he said. "The ecosystem was a little out of balance."

But the flip side to that freedom is the extra $130 price tag for 3G iPad 2 and LTE new iPad models.

An eager, eagle-eyed XDA member spotted a Google ad while searching for "xperia ion" that may be showing AT&T's hand concerning the release date of said device. One of a few ads that appear when searching for the device states that the Xperia Ion is "Coming Exclusively to AT&T in June." Well, that narrows it down a bit!

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 42 network with devices such as the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G and the HTC One S coming soon to T-Mobile. 

Ray also announced that it was in fact the acquired spectrum from the failed AT&T deal that will allow T-Mobile to deploy LTE in 2013. When asked about the company’s claim for “no clear path to LTE” during the AT&T talks, Ray responded by saying “…Most importantly, we’re getting new AWS spectrum as a result of the termination of the AT&T deal (pending regulatory approval), which we will use for LTE.” 

Finally, T-Mobile also announced multi-year agreements with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks as suppliers for its LTE network, set to launch in 2013.

LTE-enabled Samsung Focus 2 Announced by AT&T

AT&T introduced the Samsung Focus 2 which is not the most exciting phone out there for our more hardcore users, the device is certainly a looker with the glossy white and curved edges.
It's based on the Focus Flash and will come at a very affordable price for an LTE handset - it will go for $50 with a two-year contract. The other two LTE-enabled WP7 phones available from AT&T are the Nokia Lumia 900 ($100 with a 2-year contract) and the HTC Titan II ($200 with a 2-year contract).

Salt Lake City getting AT&T LTE this year

AT&T has just confirmed another market that will be getting 4G LTE this year. Salt Lake City, UT is the lucky city which will get access to their real 4G network, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson announced. No concrete date was offered, but at least we know it’ll be here at some point.
To be honest, we figured a lot of markets would get it this year and we’re confused AT&T wouldn’t wait until they have a better idea of when the network will go live for this particular market to make an announcement. In any case, you can go ahead and stock up on LTE phones this year as they promise you’ll be able to use it to its full advantage sooner or later.

Windows phone White Lumia 900 Now Listed as Temporarily Out of Stock

While the black and cyan versions of the Lumia 900 have had a couple weeks to sell, the white Lumia 900 was released only two days ago and is now listed as temporarily out of stock on the AT&T website. Sales numbers for the Lumia 900 continue to be strong in all three colors, so the launch of a magenta device in May to coincide with Mother’s Day could be a great thing after all.
When asked when more devices would be available in cyan and white, Nokia had this to say:

We are building and shipping devices constantly – so stores are receiving more units to fulfill demand on a regular basis.

With the exclusivity period for AT&T ending in just a few weeks, it seems Nokia will really have to ramp up production in order to meet world wide demand if the demand in the US and Canada are any indication.

HTC One X sold ahead of AT&T's May 6 release

HTC's upcoming high-end smartphone, One X, isn't set to hit AT&T until May 6, but that hasn't stopped a customer from actually getting their hands on one of the new smartphones.

One of Engadget's readers managed to get their mits on one, where they talked a particular store into selling them a One X early. It came on a two-year agreement at $199, and if you want some proof, there's plenty of pictures to go along with it.

You can try your luck at your local AT&T retailer, but don't blame us if you aren't as luck as this reader. This should be one of HTC's strongest phones this year, and one of the better Android-based phones to hit. We should expect more and more details, videos and thoughts on HTC's One X as more people get their hands on it.

AT&T Will Unlock Off-Contract iPhones Starting Sunday

Those of you who have purchased your iPhone off-contract, aka for the full price, will be happy to hear that AT&T will begin unlocking iPhones at customers’ request this Sunday. Carrier unlocking will allow customers “in good standing” to switch out the AT&T SIM for a SIM on another network, as long as the bands are supported. This is great for customers who want to take their AT&T iPhone internationally.
An AT&T spokeswoman confirmed the news to Engadget, saying that ”a policy change concerning iPhones” will be rolling out on Sunday. Presumably, all customers will have to do is call AT&T support to get their device unlocked. 9to5mac obtained a statement from AT&T:

“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”

Getting AT&T to unlock the iPhone has been a highly requested feature among customers. Customers will not only be able to use their AT&T iPhone overseas, but will also be able to use it with other carriers like T-Mobile. There have been numerous methods and bugs allowing you to unlock, but AT&T’s new policy is much easier. Historically, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook reportedly forced AT&T to unlock certain customer’s iPhones through a special request.
For those of you whose two-year contract has run out, you will also be able to unlock your iPhone. However, if you’re still on a two-year contract with AT&T, you’re still locked in.

AT&T issues “told you so” statement to FCC after T-Mobile layoffs

After news that T-Mobile will be closing seven call centers and terminating the jobs of over 3,000 employees, AT&T couldn’t turn down the chance to get in one last dig at the FCC for shutting down a proposed merger between the two telecom companies. Jim Cicconi, AT&T’s senior executive vice president of external and legislative affairs (quite the title), took to the carrier’s public policy blog to do his best job of spreading egg on the face of federal regulators.

“Normally, we’d not comment on something like this. But I feel this is an exception for one big reason — only a few months ago AT&T promised to preserve these very same call centers and jobs if our merger was approved. We also predicted that if the merger failed, T-Mobile would be forced into major layoffs.”

That’s not even a roundabout way of saying “told you so.” That’s a pretty direct way of saying it. I especially like the first line, which only adds to the thick air of bitterness surrounding Cicconi’s comments. He continues to further pick at the FCC’s decision, which was based in part on evidence that approval of the merger would come at the cost of thousands of jobs lost. Instead, Cicconi chides, “rarely are regulatory agency’s predictive judgements proven so wrong so fast.”
The outright frankness of the full statement makes it a worthwhile read. It’s as if Cicconi takes personal offense to the FCC’s disapproval of the merger. Rarely do we see this sort of public reaction from a high-ranking executive. Head over to the link below for the full read.

Some AT&T users able to pull ICS update for HTC Vivid

Though there has been no official statement from AT&T, some HTC Vivid owners have been able to pull what appears to be release-ready Ice Cream Sandwich update to their devices by performing a simple dialer trick. Calling *#*#682#*#* will ping the servers hosting the file and initiate a push to the handset. Some users have had to wait a bit for the update to show after dialing the number above. Others have had no success in updating the Vivid.
The build is slightly fresher than the most recent ICS leak and brings along Sense 3.6 along with Android 4.0.3, but without an official release statement we can’t be 100 percent certain this is indeed the final build AT&T and HTC intended to deliver to users. You can test your luck and see about giving the new software a spin by performing the dialer trick and waiting for that sweet treat to arrive.

Nokia Lumia 900 to hit AT&T on April 8, promo videos today

Nokia has put a lot of hope and effort into the AT&T-bound Lumia 900 - the first high-end Nokia Windows Phone handset to hit American shores with LTE and now we know the release date - April 8th. This coincides with talk about Microsoft Stores getting the handset in the second week of April. The Lumia 900 is expected to come with a tempting price tag of merely $99 on contract.
The Nokia Lumia 900 launch is expected to be big with some promos going on like gift cards for apps offered along with the phone. It’s possible that Microsoft backs it up by in some way bundling the phone with an XBOX 360. Similarly, the Lumia 800 was sold with a free XBOX 360 in the UK.
Nokia and Microsoft are planning a “rolling thunder” ad campaign for Nokia Windows Phones and the Lumia 900 in particular. The marketing will include national TV ads, print and digital marketing.
Nokia has also just released some inspirational sports videos promoting the handset featuring celebrated BMX rider James Ivett, prominent free runner Pip Andersen, and renowned skateboarder Jed Cullen. AT&T continues to grow 4G LTE network — coming soon to Cleveland, New Orleans, and more

AT&T is again bringing the power of 4G LTE to more and more areas, promising data speeds ten times that of 3G to arrive in Cleveland very soon. The press release announcing the news touts the usual aspects of LTE, which includes mention of the numerous new devices 4G customers will have access to (HTC One X, anyone?).
Cleveland won’t be alone in AT&T’s network push. In the next few months folks in Akron and Canton, Ohio; Naples, Florida; Bloomington, Lafayette and Muncie, Indiana; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana; St. Louis, Missouri; Bryan-College Station, Texas; and Staten Island will see LTE rollouts into the summer.
