iOS strategy game Little Conquest takes Galcon and runs with it

We're always a little surprised that more developers haven't taken theGalcon casual strategy formula and added to it. That's exactly what Battlebit Games have looked to do with Little Conquests, though.
In this new iOS strategy game, you start with a bunch of fixed fortifications and must take over your opponents' simply by touching and dragging from one to the other.
Provided the number of units within yours exceeds the other, you'll take it over.

Keeping my eye on you
All of this is complemented by a bright, clean cartoon art style that promises to shine on Retina display iOS devices. Indeed, unless you have a Retina display device or an iPad 2, you won't be able to play the game at all.
On the plus side, those that do will be able to play Little Conquestcompetitively online.
Little Conquest has a release date of "soon," whenever that is. Count us mildly interested.

Xbox 360 Halo 4 bundle arriving this November

By now you should know the routine. Every time Microsoft has a new Halo game, a new Xbox360 bundle arrives to mark the occasion. This Limited Edition Halo 4 Xbox 360 follows that fine tradition. And it looks damn good.
This bundle has the usual Halo-themed artwork, a copy of Halo 4, matching controllers and the system is 320GB. But here is the interesting bit. The ring of light on the console and the two matching gamepads are bright blue instead of green. It will cost you $400 and it arrives on November 6th.

Obviously this is for serious Halo fans. Are you a fan enough to snag one up? Better start saving your money. You plenty of time.

Rovio releases Amazing Alex for iOS and Android

Life after Angry Birds can get frankly quite ‘angry’. Well, Rovio begs to differ and it thinks that it make it quite ‘amazing’. Today, Rovio has released its follow up to the Angry Birds franchise called Amazing Alex for both Android and iOS. Rovio has also said that it will be launching Windows Phone, Mac and PC versions of the game very soon.
Amazing Alex is a puzzle game and is the first new game the Finnish developer has rolled out since 2009, when it released the original Angry Birds game. The game features 100 challenging levels and Rovio is promising free updates to the game like the way it has provided updates for the Angry Birds franchise.
Amazing Alex is actually a rebranding of Casey’s Contraptions. Rovio had acquired the rights for the game back in May from its creators, Snappy Touch and Mystery Coconut. Rovio had previously stated that it would rework Casey’s Contraptions and it would enhance the game by way of new content and better graphics.
The gameplay of Amazing Alex revolves around chain reactions that are needed to complete a level. The game features over 35 interactive objects, which can be used to design and publish custom levels.
The game is offered in three varieties for Android – A free Trial, a Premium version that costs Rs 54.90 and a HD version for Rs 165.82. The iPhone version of the app costs $0.99 and the iPad friendly HD version of the app costs $2.99.

Rovio next game, turns things around by playing on the pigs’ side – Angry Pigs?

Rovio must have broken some kind of record by now. The developer has created what is easily the most popular mobile game of history and has managed to stay relevant for about 2.5 years now. But there is only so much Rovio can do with its birdies, right? Well it seems like it, as the latest rumors indicate the next game will have you playing the pigs’ side.
According to Pocket-Lint’s sources, Rovio is planning to release a game in which those pesky green pigs are the stars. Of course, there are some of us that always wonder why everyone hates the pigs so much. After all, we make bacon out of them – does that make us worst?
Either way, it seems this upcoming game will have you protecting those precious stolen eggs from the birds we have all grown to love. The game will feature a variety of pigs with different abilities, as well as wooden, stone and ice blocks. All for the sake of keeping those little eggs.
The same sources state that the game will be ready before Christmas. Until then, let’s just be happy flinging good ol’ birds.

Documents leaks of Xbox 720 a $299 console with Kinect 2

After E3, it became pretty apparent that Microsoft was not planning on releasing a new console in 2012. That said, it was only a matter of time before the company released a new console as Nintendo had already announced its Wii U and the competition has the leg up over the Xbox 360 in graphical firepower. The folks at NukeZilla confirmed this. as they uncovered a 56 page dossier for the development of the Xbox 720, Kinect 2 and a Kinect Glasses project.
Starting with the console itself, the 56 page dossier calls the next Xbox, the Xbox 720 and states that the console should have a Blue-Ray drive, native 3D output and glasses, applications, more sensors and peripherals and a massive 6x bump in the overall performance from the Xbox 360. Other features outlined for the development of the new console include, FullHD 1080p playback and an always on state for the console. Microsoft wants the CPU on the new Xbox to have scalable cores and frequencies. It seems like the document is from a very early stage of the development cycle and Microsoft seems to be debating weather to use an ARM or x86 architecture with either six or eight cores clocked at 2GHz each with 4GB of DDR4 memory, alongside three PPC cores clocked at 3.2GHz each for backwards compatibility with existing Xbox 360 titles.
Microsoft wants to build a strong content story around the console and wants to bill it as the only thing one needs for their living room. For this, it plans to provide a baked in recording feature for TV content and a Windows 8 base to create a unified apps ecosystem for Windows Phone, Windows 8 and the Xbox. Microsoft intends to sell the console with the next Kinect for $299 over a ten year lifecycle and plans to sell over 100 million units.
As mentioned above, Redmond is even planning to release anew version of the Kinect called the Kinect 2. Microsoft wants to improve accuracy of the gesture input, but while doing so also wants to include features like stereo imaging, improved voice recognition, support for four-player tracking, an improved RGB camera, and dedicated hardware processing. Another aspect to the Kinect that the document references to multiplayer support for up to four with the user having the ability to improve the experience by way of accessories.
And this is not it, as Microsoft also has a Kinect Glasses project in development which has been codenamed Fortaleza. While, the document does not shed a lot of information on it, we do know that it will run on either Wi-Fi or 4G networks and will perhaps, incorporate augmented reality in a way that’s similar to Google’s Project Glass augmented reality glasses. This product might launch by 2014, and it does appear that it has been tailored for mobile use.

But for our younger readers, I’ll go ahead and give you the spiel. You’re a cop, with a chip on his shoulder who finds himself on the wrong side of the law after his family is brutally murdered in his home. The first game to make use of the now famous “Bullet Time” gameplay mechanic, you shoot the face off of everything, and everyone that comes your way in order to exact revenge on those responsible. The game uses photo realistic graphics (cutting edge back in its day) and mixes a unique graphic novel style cutscenes, with dark, noir storytelling.

Max Payne for Android out in the Google Play Store at midnight eastern

We’ve just been notified that Max Payne for Android will be out June 14th at 12AM eastern. We’d already gotten confirmation before but it’s nice to know when, exactly, we can expect it. This game is version of the PS2 classic remastered for Android devices. As a bad*** DEA agent, you take on a case of mysterious properties which finds Max Payne’s personal life involved. I don’t want to spoil the story so I won’t go any further if you haven’t played it. There is a short wait between now and then, though, so keep your eyes on the Google Play Store once it arrives.

Xbox SmartGlass to be supported by all first-party Xbox 360 games starting this Fall

Easily the most exciting announcement from Microsoft's E3 2012 conference, Xbox SmartGlass is going to be a big push to bring all of those extra screens you have into your Xbox 360. We know the obvious applications for music and video, but a murkier question surrounded gaming and how your tablet, smartphone or Windows 8 PC would interact while you're kicking butt as Master Chief.

Joystiq attempted to find out an answer to this by speaking to Phil Spencer, Corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, who said that from the release of SmartGlass and onwards all of their games (read: first-party games published by Microsoft) will bundle in support for the technology. We already got a hint of this with the two games they did demonstrate like Ascend: New Gods and Halo 4, but Spencer elaborates that the potential is far greater:

"It just makes so much sense for a developer who wants to supply, maybe not time-critical information, like 'that enemy is getting ready to shoot you,' but information that augments what's happening on screen," Spencer says. He used last year's Halo Waypoint Atlas app, which offered multiplayer GPS tracking, as an example of how SmartGlass features could share additional game information without hampering the moment-to-moment gameplay. "And then you're even going to see situations like with Ascend, where there's actually gameplay that happens on the phone, even when you're away from your television and that interacts back with the online game that's happening. So I think you'll see information sharing, context sharing while you're in the room, with video and with games, as well as gameplay happening in more distributed environments."

Must Have iOS Games ForThis Week

Project 83113 — Universal ($0.99)
Project 83113 is an action-packed platform game that features intuitive touch controls and really great visuals. You take control of “mankind’s last hope,” Belle, a special unit agent who has been created for one purpose: to “bring an end to the reign of the machine.”

Make your way through four intense worlds, tapping on enemies to take them down with deadly attacks. Be sure to collect the crystals you come across along the way, which you’ll need to upgrade your weapons. I’ve always been a huge fan of platform games, and I’ve been enjoying Project 83113 a great deal since its release.

 
Golf KingDoms — iPhone ($1.99) / iPad ($1.99)
If you’re as terrible at golf as I am, then I believe the best way to enjoy it is in the form of a good video game. Golf KingDoms is definitely that. This unique take on golf isn’t another Tiger Woods PGA Tour clone, but rather a 2D side-scrolling puzzle game unlike any other golf game I’ve played.
Use your finger to adjust the direction and the power of each shot and try to make your way to the green. You’ll have to avoid obstacles like nasty crevices, sheets of ice, and molten lava. It’s often incredibly frustrating, yet hugely enjoyable and addictive.
There are two game modes to choose from: Practice Tee, where you can perfect your game; or Tournament, which needs little explanation. And there are 3 kingdoms, with 27 holes. For me, the only bad thing about Golf KingDoms is that it’s not a universal app, so you’ll need to pay $1.99 to play on your iPhone, and another $1.99 to play on your iPad. 

Euro Soccer — Universal ($1.99)


Euro 2012 is finally underway, and while they may not mean much to those of you in the U.S., us Brits can’t get enough of it. Which is why one of my must-have games this week had to be a soccer sim. Euro Soccer comes from First Touch, the developers behind Score! Classic Goals, and it promises to be the “soccer app you can’t afford to miss!”

It features an intuitive defensive and attacking player AI — which aims to provide a challenging and addictive experience — coupled with powerful touch controls and impressive visuals. Pick your 23-man squad from a database of over 4,000 players, then lead them to European victory, unlocking as many achievements as you can along the way.


Catapult King — Universal ($0.99)
Catapult King, as its name suggests, is a first-person catapulting game in which you must destroy forts, castles, and fire-breathing dragons in an effort to rescue a helpless princess, who has been kidnapped by dragons and nasty knights. It’s a little like Angry Birds, but from a first-person perspective.

There are 64 challenging levels for you to enjoy, all of which take place in gorgeous 3D worlds. Every level you complete brings you magic, which you can use to upgrade your catapult.

Angry Birds to arrive on consoles in HD graphics

Space – it is not the final frontier like we originally thought, as the bird brains over at Rovio figured out that home consoles are the final frontier instead for their hugely successful Angry Birds franchise which had taken the world by storm, appearing on just about every mobile platform out there – iOS and Android being the two prominent operating systems. What next? Is an official theme park not enough for the good people over at Rovio to just take a break? Apparently not, as Activision showed off a teaser reel at their E3 booth, where it had one of them Angry Birds coming in and pegging the Activision logo. When probed further about it, an Activision spokesperson did ask us to wait for a few more weeks, where an announcement is set to follow after that. The statement was backed up with, “Wait until you see it on consoles in HD.” Angry Birds in High Definition? It definitely is not going to push TV sales further north, but we will perch on this and hope that the eggs on this bit of news will hatch sooner rather than later.

6 New Games for Xbox Live added by Microsoft to their $0.99 game roster

6 New Games for Xbox Live added by Microsoft to their $0.99 game roster, and is urging buyers to “collect them all”. The list includes recent releases like Feed Me Oil and Droplitz Delight, making Xbox Live games obviously a lot more attractive than before.
There has been some controversy around this move, with some complaining that Xbox Live games already dominate the top 10 list, and making them cheaper will just exclude even more 3rd party game developers.
From the user point of view it is however a great deal normalizes prices of games with other platforms and which may prompt greater uptake of the Windows Phone platform.

Promotion for students in US, Canada Microsoft renews 'buy a PC, get a free Xbox'

People are always comparing and contrasting PCs and consoles, but of course, the ideal is to have both platforms. For students, doubling up will be just as easy this year as it was last year. Microsoft has renewed its promotion that makes students eligible for a free Xbox 360 if they purchase a PC worth a certain price.

Here are the criteria, in Microsoft's words:

Starting May 20th in the U.S., students who buy a qualifying Windows PC worth $699 or more at participating retailers can get a 4GB Xbox 360 console for free, just like last year! Starting May 18th in Canada, students who buy a Windows PC worth $599 or more can also get a 4GB Xbox 360 console for free!
Participating retailers in the US include Best Buy, Dell.com, Fry’s Electronics, HPDirect.com, Microsoft Stores, and NewEgg.com. In Canada, they include Best Buy, Dell.ca, Future Shop, Staples and The Source.

Not sure why Canadians get a sweeter deal, but okay. Oh, and obviously, providing student ID will be a must in either country. Those e-tailers and retailers aren't just going to let anyone youthful-looking walk off with a free Xbox.

Even if you're a die-hard PC gamer, I think it's hard to take issue with the promotion. Xbox 360 exclusives remain a reality, and the console offers a different multiplayer experience than the PC. I hope this won't encourage students to buy cut-rate PCs without decent graphics, though.

Microsoft is set to give the Xbox 360 a modified version of the Internet Explorer 9 browser

The speculations are made that Microsoft is set to give the Xbox 360 a modified version of the Internet Explorer 9 browser.
The modified version of the browser is said to support Kinect gestures for control. However, the Kinect accessory is not required to use the browser apparently. Presumably that means you could control your web surfing using the standard Xbox 360 game pad as well.

The sources offer no detail on the launch of the browser. However, with E3 starting next month if there's any substance to the rumor we expect to hear more at the show. Adding a real web browser to the Xbox 360 will certainly lure in more users that don't have interest in video games.

Rovio’s CEO, said the new game will be launched within 2 months, but no indication on the price or what mobile OS it’ll be available on. Amazing Alex will have an educational spin to it and focus on a “young boy who loves to build things.” Hed noted that “The quality pressure is high. We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy.”

Rovio has secured the domain AmazingAlex.com, which currently has a teaser stating it’s “coming soon.”

Spec Ops: The Line Demo Now Available On Xbox Live (video)

2K games has announced a demo version of its new shooter Spec Ops for xbox Gold subscribers others will get fro 15th may onward.
The demo puts players in the shoes of Captain Martin Walker as he undertakes a mission in Dubai amidst cataclysmic sandstorms. It features portions of two early chapters in Spec Ops: The Line, and hopefully it contains minimal spoilers. Only single-player modes will be available in the demo. The game’s unique class-based multiplayer will be left for the full product.

Spec Ops: The Line is set to launch on 29th June 2012 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles, the latest game is the ninth instalment Spec Ops series. Enjoy!

Samsung announces over $4 million in prizes for Smart app challenge

Samsung announces over $4 million in prizes for Smart app challenge  and  $30,000 to $200,000 increments, to be awarded to app developers in its Smart App Challenge 2012 contest. The idea is to promote great apps created specially for the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab series devices, whose larger-than-phone screen sizes don’t usually get love from the Android community.

The general Note and Tab apps are to be judged on popularity — number of downloads and similar metrics — with the top achievers earning not only financial rewards but space in Samsung’s press releases, advertising campaigns and marketing strategies. Apps specifically designed to make use of the S Pen will be judged by a panel. The top winner in each category will earn $200,000, and several awards of $100,000 and $50,000 will also be available.

In all 80 winners will be chosen, with promises of notoriety and pseudo-fame. The promotion runs between now and September 30th, so if you’re an Android developer with some time to kill, get working.

The Music extension is used to control music playback on the phone from the SmartWatch accessory. Develop your own game based on the 8 Game extension
The 8 Game extension is a simple puzzle game for SmartWatch. The purpose of the game is to reorder the tiles on the screen until you see the full image. You can either use an image on the phone, or use tiles with numbers. To move a tile, you press it, or swipe it in the direction you want to move it. Once the tiles are in the correct order, you can choose to share the results by e-mail, SMS text message or through a social media app. If you long press during the game, it will bring up a menu where you can start a new game.
