How to use the Motion Gestures in the Galaxy SIII

Samsung galaxy S III is the Samsung's high end phone and it has lots and lots features in it out of them Motion gesture is one of them through this the phone can call the particular contact by its sensors.

While individual apps may give you a pop up about a particular Motion enabled app, they can all be enabled and configured in the Settings app.

• Pull down the Notification drawer and tap the Settings icon
• Scroll down to Motion and tap
• The Motion menu will now be displayed 

           

After this you can mange which sservice to activate and which to deactivate

Enabling Motion activation

Before you can use any of the Motion settings, you need to enable Motion activation on the Galaxy S3. This is as simple as placing a check mark in the Motion activation box.

Direct call

Direct call is a very convenient feature – as long as you remember it is enabled. Imagine you are looking up a particular contact to find their number, email or whatever.

1. Pick up the phone and move it to your face as if you were going to call them
2. The Galaxy S3 will automatically call the contact
3. This can be done via the Messaging and Call logs as well

  

I did find that it is possible to forget this feature is enabled and accidentally call someone when lifting the phone up in one of these apps – but, overall, this is a very cool feature.

Smart alert

Smart alert is a way to make sure you are notified about missed calls and alerts. Essentially, the Galaxy S3 knows when you have placed it down and it turns the screen off. When you pick up the device, you will be notified about your missed call and alerts. The phone will vibrate as soon as you pick it up if you have missed calls or alerts.

  

Tap to top

Tap to top makes it very quick to jump to the top of your Contact list, Email list and your email messages.

• Open the Contacts or Email app
• Scroll for what you need
• Tap twice on the very top of the phone (not the screen – but the actual top of the phone)
• You will see the view jump to the topThe only problem with this feature is that it works on the native Contacts and Email app, but I could not get it to work on the Gmail app which is what I use for email on the Galaxy S3.

Tilt to zoo
The Tilt to zoom feature allows you to simply tilt the phone – as opposed to pinching and zooming – to zoom in on a picture or web site

1. Tap and hold the phone at two separate points (usually with your thumbs)
2. Tilt the Galaxy S3 towards you to zoom in
3. Tilt it away from you to zoom out

  

I actually found it much quicker to just pinch and zoom – but, again, it is a cool use of the technology.

Pan to move icon

Let’s say you want to move an icon to one of your Home screens. Normally, you would touch and hold the icon and then try to drag it onto another Home screen.

Pan to move takes another approach. You still touch and hold the icon, but instead of dragging it while holding it down, just move the phone left or right and you will see the Home screens move as you pan. When you find the Home screen you want, just release and the icon will be moved to the new position.

  

 

​Touch on the Pan to move tab and you can see another tab to adjust the Sensitivity. Move the slider from slow to Fast and then test out the settings to see what works best for you.

Pan to browse images
When this feature is turned on, you can literally “move around” the image in which you are zoomed in.
So, you need to zoom into a picture or web site, then:

• Touch and hold anywhere on the screen
• Move the phone up or down, left or right to pan around
• Release to stop panning

As you did with Pan to move, you can adjust the sensitivity of the panning by touching the Sensitivity slider and moving it towards Slow or Fast.

Shake to update

Various apps on the Galaxy S3 take advantage of this Motion. When in those apps, just shake the phone and it will update the information. This works in the Weather widget, Email and News apps at the moment.

This feature also works with Bluetooth. Simple shake the device in the Bluetooth menu to search for Bluetooth devices.

Turn over to mute/pause

Imagine you are in that important meeting and you didn’t turn off your speaker. A phone call comes in or a message alert with an inappropriate ring tone. What do you do?

Well, if you have this feature enabled – just turn the switch to the ON position, all you have to do is turn your phone over on its face to mute the alert.

This feature also works with the built in Samsung Media apps. It will not work, however, if you are using Google Play Music or Movie apps. It would be nice to see these features extended beyond the built in Samsung apps.

Hand motions

The last of the Motions are Hand motions. The Palm swipe to capture was covered in this tutorial and allows you to take a screen shot by simply swiping your hand across the screen of the Galaxy S3.

The next Hand motion is Palm touch to mute/pause. This works just like turning your phone over in the Turn over to mute/pause motion discussed above. In this case, you just cover the phone with your palm (which is very intuitive) and you will mute the ring tone, message or media. Again, this only works on the stock Samsung apps – not Google Play music of movies or other media apps.

All of the Motion gestures are pretty unique and innovative. You may find that some are not as useful as others, but take some time to experiment and see if these built-in gestures can enhance your productivity and the overall experience you have with the Galaxy S3.

iOS strategy game Little Conquest takes Galcon and runs with it

We're always a little surprised that more developers haven't taken theGalcon casual strategy formula and added to it. That's exactly what Battlebit Games have looked to do with Little Conquests, though.
In this new iOS strategy game, you start with a bunch of fixed fortifications and must take over your opponents' simply by touching and dragging from one to the other.
Provided the number of units within yours exceeds the other, you'll take it over.

Keeping my eye on you
All of this is complemented by a bright, clean cartoon art style that promises to shine on Retina display iOS devices. Indeed, unless you have a Retina display device or an iPad 2, you won't be able to play the game at all.
On the plus side, those that do will be able to play Little Conquestcompetitively online.
Little Conquest has a release date of "soon," whenever that is. Count us mildly interested.

Apple adds Uniique Identifier to in-app purchase receipts

Apple has begun adding a new field to its in-app purchase receipts entitled ‘unique_identifier’. The addition of the field was reported by Macrumors, but contrary to its article, it does not appear to contain a Unique Device Identifier (UDID), something that Apple has been instructing developers to move away from.
Instead, the field contains a unique string of numbers that could be any number of things ranging from a randomly generated value that is unique to a device, to a cryptographic hash of the UDID that accomplishes the same thing.
Either way, it’s hard to say at this point whether this has anything to do with the recent in-app purchase bypass, which has allowed over 37,000 free purchases. It’s simply too early to say whether this is related to that, or to a particular new App Store feature for developers that Apple will launch with iOS 6.

BlackBerry App World Reaches 3 Billion Downloads

Blackberyy makes the neat little landmark i.e. 3 Billion app have been downloaded from the blackberry app world. The company has taken to its Inside BlackBerry blog to commemorate the occasion, saying it busts the myth that there aren't enough apps for RIM's smartphones and PlayBook tablet.
The three billion total has been reached in 1,172 days, which averages out at 2.5 million a day.
However, the news RIM will be most pleased is the increased download activity, with the first billion downloads taking four times longer than the third.
The app store also now has over 90,000 apps for download which is a pretty small figure when you take into account theWindows Marketplace which hit 100,000 apps last month and it’s been around for a shorter time period.

And of course the 3 billion downloads is nothing compared to Apple’s 25 billion or Google’s 20 billion – but it does show that there are enough apps on the BlackBerry App World to generate that many downloads so it’s not too bad. However, if RIM doesn’t bring its A-game to the table (especially in the US) with BlackBerry 10, you can be pretty sure that people aren’t going to stick around long enough to increase that download counter significantly.

Apple released a standalone Podcasts app into the App Store

Apple released a standalone Podcasts app into the App Store for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad today for junkies who want to separate their listening experience from the rest of iTunes. Users will get full access to Apple’s already extensive library of thousands upon thousands of audio and video podcasts.
Rumors about a dedicated Podcasts app have been a bit of a roller coaster over the past few weeks. Shortly after the first beta of iOS 6 came out, we reported Apple was working on bringing a Podcasts app to a future version of the OS because they were suspiciously removed from iTunes. Then yesterday, Apple released iOS 6 beta 2 which brought podcasts back to iTunes. Just when everyone thought the standalone app wouldn’t see the light of day, here it is.
The Podcasts app that was made a reality today takes a similar UI to the new iTunes Store and App Store in iOS 6 with dark navigation bars and backgrounds. You can scroll through podcasts or top stations, which will nicely organize them into a carousel sorted by category. A sleep timer is available if you’re listening at night and the app will also sync playback progress across devices. Tap the Catalog to flip over and browse more podcasts to subscribe, favorite or share.
There might be some negative feedback about Apple choosing to let podcasts go solo in iOS, but I think it was a smart move. Most people either faithfully subscribe to podcasts (or make podcasts themselves) or just ignore them altogether. Making a separate Podcasts app is beneficial to people on either side.

Tripdots app now available for Windows Phone

Back at CTIA, Nokia and Microsoft announced what we lovingly described as a "truckload" of apps coming soon to Windows Phone. So far we've only seen a few of those apps make their way out in to the Marketplace, but now another one is up for download: Tripdots by Left Lane Network, Inc.

Launching first for Windows Phone (not Lumia-exclusive) and later for Android and iOS, we think the best way to describe Tripdots as a Foursquare for driving. If that seems a little confusing to you, we'll let the official description try to clear things up:

Just like when you compete for check-ins and to claim the sought-after Mayor status, this app offers a global leaderboard system so that you can track your progress and compete on a global scale. It's quite an intriguing app to play around with, and we recommend you give it a shot; after all, it's completely free too.

Most awaited Max Payne Mobile for android is released today.This is one of the few games I’ve ever played to completion, I’m sure you already know exactly what this game is about. But for our younger readers, I’ll go ahead and give you the spiel. You’re a cop, with a chip on his shoulder who finds himself on the wrong side of the law after his family is brutally murdered in his home. The first game to make use of the now famous “Bullet Time” gameplay mechanic, you shoot the face off of everything, and everyone that comes your way in order to exact revenge on those responsible. The game uses photo realistic graphics (cutting edge back in its day) and mixes a unique graphic novel style cutscenes, with dark, noir storytelling.

Must Have iOS Games ForThis Week

Project 83113 — Universal ($0.99)
Project 83113 is an action-packed platform game that features intuitive touch controls and really great visuals. You take control of “mankind’s last hope,” Belle, a special unit agent who has been created for one purpose: to “bring an end to the reign of the machine.”

Make your way through four intense worlds, tapping on enemies to take them down with deadly attacks. Be sure to collect the crystals you come across along the way, which you’ll need to upgrade your weapons. I’ve always been a huge fan of platform games, and I’ve been enjoying Project 83113 a great deal since its release.

 
Golf KingDoms — iPhone ($1.99) / iPad ($1.99)
If you’re as terrible at golf as I am, then I believe the best way to enjoy it is in the form of a good video game. Golf KingDoms is definitely that. This unique take on golf isn’t another Tiger Woods PGA Tour clone, but rather a 2D side-scrolling puzzle game unlike any other golf game I’ve played.
Use your finger to adjust the direction and the power of each shot and try to make your way to the green. You’ll have to avoid obstacles like nasty crevices, sheets of ice, and molten lava. It’s often incredibly frustrating, yet hugely enjoyable and addictive.
There are two game modes to choose from: Practice Tee, where you can perfect your game; or Tournament, which needs little explanation. And there are 3 kingdoms, with 27 holes. For me, the only bad thing about Golf KingDoms is that it’s not a universal app, so you’ll need to pay $1.99 to play on your iPhone, and another $1.99 to play on your iPad. 

Euro Soccer — Universal ($1.99)


Euro 2012 is finally underway, and while they may not mean much to those of you in the U.S., us Brits can’t get enough of it. Which is why one of my must-have games this week had to be a soccer sim. Euro Soccer comes from First Touch, the developers behind Score! Classic Goals, and it promises to be the “soccer app you can’t afford to miss!”

It features an intuitive defensive and attacking player AI — which aims to provide a challenging and addictive experience — coupled with powerful touch controls and impressive visuals. Pick your 23-man squad from a database of over 4,000 players, then lead them to European victory, unlocking as many achievements as you can along the way.


Catapult King — Universal ($0.99)
Catapult King, as its name suggests, is a first-person catapulting game in which you must destroy forts, castles, and fire-breathing dragons in an effort to rescue a helpless princess, who has been kidnapped by dragons and nasty knights. It’s a little like Angry Birds, but from a first-person perspective.

There are 64 challenging levels for you to enjoy, all of which take place in gorgeous 3D worlds. Every level you complete brings you magic, which you can use to upgrade your catapult.

Angry Birds to arrive on consoles in HD graphics

Space – it is not the final frontier like we originally thought, as the bird brains over at Rovio figured out that home consoles are the final frontier instead for their hugely successful Angry Birds franchise which had taken the world by storm, appearing on just about every mobile platform out there – iOS and Android being the two prominent operating systems. What next? Is an official theme park not enough for the good people over at Rovio to just take a break? Apparently not, as Activision showed off a teaser reel at their E3 booth, where it had one of them Angry Birds coming in and pegging the Activision logo. When probed further about it, an Activision spokesperson did ask us to wait for a few more weeks, where an announcement is set to follow after that. The statement was backed up with, “Wait until you see it on consoles in HD.” Angry Birds in High Definition? It definitely is not going to push TV sales further north, but we will perch on this and hope that the eggs on this bit of news will hatch sooner rather than later.

Update for Instagram for Android which improves search functionality

Instagram for Android has new update ready in Google play which improves the search, support for geotagged images taken from the phone’s gallery, and bug fixes for the Instagram advanced camera and resolve the various nagging issues  that users were having with the apps.

Facebook’s Platform execs travel to Berlin to promote, mingle with startups

This evening, as in right now, Facebook is throwing a little event called Apps & Drinks in hot European startup hub Berlin to schmooze with and promote local companies that have partnered with the social networking giant.
I had a quick chat about what they’re going to be talking about tonight with Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s global Director of Platform Partnerships, and Christian Hernandez, who serves the same role for the EMEA region.
Tonight, Facebook is going to be touting some Berlin-based startups that have integrated with its Platform, and if you’re even mildly interested in the European startup scene, you’re likely to recognize these names: SoundCloud, Amen, Moviepilot.com, EyeEm, Tape.tv, simfy and Readmill are among the names on the list I was cordially sent in lieu of being able to attend the event in person.
Another well-known startup joining the line-up tonight is Ashton Kutcher-backed activity marketplace Gidsy, which is the only one actually debuting a new app leveraging social discovery via Facebook today to boot.
Another one, digital TV platform company Zattoo, is going to introduce its new Facebook Platform-enhanced service at Apps & Drinks tonight, but it will take another few weeks for them to effectively launch it.
So does Facebook actually have an office in Berlin?
Turns out that, yes, they do, but it currently only serves to give 2 public policy employees a desk at this point – most of Facebook’s German operations are run from Hamburg and other European countries.

6 New Games for Xbox Live added by Microsoft to their $0.99 game roster

6 New Games for Xbox Live added by Microsoft to their $0.99 game roster, and is urging buyers to “collect them all”. The list includes recent releases like Feed Me Oil and Droplitz Delight, making Xbox Live games obviously a lot more attractive than before.
There has been some controversy around this move, with some complaining that Xbox Live games already dominate the top 10 list, and making them cheaper will just exclude even more 3rd party game developers.
From the user point of view it is however a great deal normalizes prices of games with other platforms and which may prompt greater uptake of the Windows Phone platform.

Nokia “smokes” BlackBerry users in new Amazing Everyday video challenge

Nokia wants you to use the “Smarter Apps” of their Lumia Windows Phone line, and in the tradition of past Windows Phone challenges has released a video showing of a demonstration representative challenging some BlackBerry users to see who can check in via FourSquare more rapidly.
The video is more light-hearted than the “Smoked by Windows” campaign earlier this year, and includes a magic trick as well as free Lumia’s for the participants in the challenge. Like the Smoked by Windows commercials, the video focuses on the benefits of being able to pin apps to the Live Tiles, which in this case lets the user check in in a couple of short taps.

A recognizable name amongst the mainstream public by any measure, Bloomberg has come out with an official app on both iOS and Android to give users instant access to its vast and comprehensive database of business news, market data and portfolio tracking tools.

Get market-moving news from a broad swath of categories -- 35 in total -- ranging from Economics, Politics, Technology, Health Care, Currencies, Emerging Markets and more. Consistently one of the highest rated apps for stocks in the app store, it serves up details ranging from broad market indices to details on a specific commodity, and boasts a target market of both amateur hobbyists and serious finance heads.

Organize at-a-glance stocks, a summary of market conditions, a daily ticker video, real-time and after hours data, statistics and graphs. Some handy features within the app even let you deal with smart pagination and shake navigation (shaking your phone to take you back to the menu screen) for less hassle.

CNNMoney (Free; iPhone, Android)

When you have an app that's been put out by the triumvirate of CNN, Fortune and Money, you can expect quality. CNNMoney delivers both breaking business news and comprehensive market coverage from one of the most authoritative sources in business and financial news.

So what features can you enjoy within the app exactly? With CNNMoney, you'll get a proprietary news feed, full articles, breaking news alerts, video, a stock ticker, customized stock quotes and tracking, market updates, and content you've handpicked yourself.

Must-Have iOS App

Google+ was once one of the most boring iOS apps you could download, and that was one of the reasons why I avoided the social network as much as possible. But its latest update changes that completely. It’s now pretty and simplistic, with a whole new navigation experience and stacks of performance improvements.

iOS 6: Siri Coming to iPad with iOS 6

Apple Now introducing Siri to iPad with iOS6.Apple also plans to expand the Siri feature by releasing an API and bringing it to the iPad.

Apple also plans to release a Siri API so third-party app developers can develop apps around Siri. To date, Siri on the iPhone 4S only works with a small number of Apple applications, like the browser, calendar and messaging clients.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 6 at its developer conference in early June, where new iCloud features and deeper iOS integration with OS X Mountain Lion are also expected.
