Siri coming to older iPhones and iPads? Nah, probably not

When Apple first lifted the lid on Siri at the tail end of the iPhone 4S unveilingin October, we initially assumed that the voice recognition nonsense would be a bog standard feature of iOS 5 – across all iDevices.

Of course, we now know Siri is exclusive to the iPhone 4S, and while Apple maintains that Siri won’t be coming to earlier iDevices, there are persistent rumours to the contrary on the cyberweb. Salt please.
The latest rumours are fuelled by a supposed reference to dictation in the code for the beta version of iOS 5.1.3.

However, as T3 observes, it’s merely a reference to dictation, rather than evidence of the full “Where’s the nearest Starbucks?” action offered by Siri.

While most iPhone 4S owners I’ve spoken to see Siri as nothing more than a vaguely amusing gimmick (which invariably – and hilariously – seems to fail the moment someone says: “Check this out!”), analysts reckon the voice recognition action was a major driver of iPhone 4S sales. Pfft.

To be fair, Siri has been responsible for some fairly amusing stories of late. We’ve had Funny sh*t with Siri, suggestions that it’s anti-abortion and recently a kid in Tesco was told to “Shut the f**k up”.
