Pre ordering of Samsung Galaxy S III starts in uk with, The Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4U andClove all unveiling their plans to sell Sammy’s new flagship device
We’ve known for a while now that the Motorola DEFY is
designed to withstand the rigors of everyday life, but at this year’s Mobile
World Congress we got more than the standard water dunk test to prove it.
Motorola is letting attendees have a go at wrecking the Defy by dumping sand on
top of it, pelting it with coins, and dripping water on the screen.
The results of our attempts at trashing the handset were met only by the
completely functional Defy staring back at us. We can’t say the phone was
completely unscathed, particularly from the coin test. Its case had some dings
but the screen remained without a scratch. Pretty impressive stuff.
Quad-core processor. Android 4.0. The fastest phone in the world? That’s the
claim Huawei is making about their brand new Ascend D Quad. These boastful
statements are a fun PR ploy for launches, but their truthfulness is usually
short-lived as bigger, better, faster, thinner, and whatever-elser devices seem
to out-awesome their predessors on a daily basis. Even so, the D Quad is pretty
impressive for an Android manufacturer who has come a long way in the past
couple years. CORRECTION: The D Quad leverages its own Huawei made 1.5GHz K3V2
processor, not an NVIDIA processor as mentioned in the below
video.
While the D Quad leads with it’s 4 cores and Android 4.0, there are a few
other reasons to consider this phone a beast, including:
4.5-inch screen
8MP camera
Front facing camera
Only 8.9mm thick
The D Quad has an 1800 mAh battery but you can upgrade to the D Quad XL with
a 2500 mAh battery for extra juice. Of course that will come with some extra
thickness too.
When Huawei first entered the Android scene in North America their devices
worked and felt like they were, shall we say, more on the economical side. The D
Quad completely diverges from that path. It’s meant to be a high end device, and
from what I can tell after my limited use with the phone, it succeeds. Huawei is
really becoming a contender, whether or not the D Quad remains the “fastest
smartphone” for very long.
Nokia has launched a new camera phone -- Nokia 808 PureView -- boasting of jaw dropping 41 megapixel sensor. And if you think it is just one off, no it is not. As according to Nokia, it plans to introduce the same technologies into other handsets in the future too.
The high-density sensor comes paired with a Carl Zeiss lens and new pixel oversampling technology. The heavy weight sensor will allow the smartphone to shoot high-detail images at standard 5 and 8 megapixel resolutions while still providing the super clarity of large 38 megapixel images that users can crop down as needed. The high-resolution sensor also means that the phone can record 1080p HD video with 4x digital zoom with no loss of detail.
Unveiled on the opening day of ongoing Mobile World Congress being held in Barcelona, spain, Nokia 808 PureView runs on Symbian Belle operating system.
Other than 41-MP sensor, 808 PureView will also come equipped with several multimedia enhancements, including a Nokia Rich Recording, which enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality. The Nokia 808 PureView also packs Dolby Headphone technology and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.
There's 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of storage using a microSD.
According to Nokia, the 808 PureView will launch in May 2012.
The new 10.1-inch Galaxy Note is being promoted on large banners at MWC in Barcelona, and is being demonstrated by Samsung staff at the company booth. Unfortunately for Samsung, the announcement on the 10-inch Galaxy Note is not as newsworthy as the company would have hoped, with details on the tablet recently spilled on the firm's blog earlier this month.
The new Galaxy Note comes with an S-Pen stylus, runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and has a punchy 1.4GHz Exynos dual-core processor. There is also a 3MP rear-facing camera, and a 2MP camera on the front for videocalling. The tablet has a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 resolution PLS multi-touch display.
As with the 5-inch Note, the tablet features the S Notes tool, a place for bringing hand-written notes and web-content together, and also boasts pre-loaded apps for Adobe Photoshop Touch and Adobe Ideas.
TabTimes is reporting live from the show, and will be talking with Samsung tomorrow to find out more details on the new tablet.
LG had a little bit of everything to show off at their booth at Mobile World
Congress, from the huge screen of the Optimus Vu to the awesome power of the
Optimus 4X HD. But another series Optimus devices was also announced that
focused less on high octane hardware and more on pure style. The Optimus L
Series is comprised of three handsets that sit squarely in the mid-range
category, the Optimus L3, Optimus L5, and Optimus L7.
The Optimus L3 features a 3.2-inch display, 800MHz processor, and Android
2.3. The Optimus L5 and L7 both run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with the
former sporting a 4.0-inch display and the latter with a 4.3-inch screen. The L5
carries the same 800MHz chip as the L3 while the L7 kicks things up to 1GHz.
With the L Series LG wants to bring good looking phones to a broader group of
people. For those looking for both power and style, the Optimus 4X HD is the
obvious choice, but at a lower price point you still get an Android 4.0 device
with a bit of flare. Rounded edges, a soft touch back, and minimalist accents
achieve LG’s goal of “machine in the front, human in the back” (sounds like some
sort of robo-mullet). Otherwise, the L series phones are just what you’d expect
from devices of their class.
The Nokia Lumia 610 will come in white, cyan, magenta and black for the price of 189 €. Nokia expects the device to hit the market some time in Q2.
Nokia Lumia 900
The Lumia 900 will make its global debut this year. Elop made a note the high-end Windows Phone device will also hit Canada with Rogers in its LTE version and HSPA+ for the rest of the world.
The global version of the Lumia 900 will come in its usual colors, white, cyan and black and will retail for 480€. Like the Lumia 610 it will too out in Q2.
In addition, Nokia is updating some of the applications on Windows Phone as well as introducing new ones. Nokia Drive is one of the updated apps.
The updated Nokia Drive includes not only updated maps and content, but also the addition of speed limits, which is handy. And to make it even harder to resist, Nokia has thrown in full offline capabilities.
The new one is Nokia Reading. It is a personalized news feed app, just like Google Reader on Android or Pulse. Nokia Reading provides local language content as well as books and news. Nokia will provide the app as a free download, too.
In addition, Windows Phone is coming finally to China. And because of the need to reach emerging markets, Nokia announced the minimum requirements for devices to run Windows Phone 7 is now just 256MB of RAM on devices with Qualcomm 7x278 family of chips.
