Asus' Eee Pad Transformer Prime has been getting a lot of attention in the run-up to its new year release and it's easy to see why. The device is powerful, pretty and jam-packed with top-tier features.
So we've decided to see just how good this new tablet is by sticking it in the ring with the fantastic Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – a device that's no stranger to plaudits of its own.
Software
Both of today's contenders are powered by Google's tablet-centric Android Honeycomb, with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime on version 3.2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on 3.0.
The software is fast, stable and very user friendly, as well as featuring overhauled core applications and a tweaked UI that's designed specifically for use on tablets.
There are tons of apps available for the OS too via the Android Market, but not many are optimised purely for tablets, which is something of a disappointment.
Nonetheless the overall Google experience is pleasingly evident in both devices.

Camera
Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a 3.15-megapixel primary camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging and 720P video capture, which performs fairly well considering the low pixel count.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 also benefits from a 2-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for video calling and taking the odd self-portrait and it also performs surprisingly well.
The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime boasts a top quality 8-megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus, geo-tagging and full 1080P video capture, as well as a 1.2-megapixel front-facing snapper for video calling.
Both cameras on the Asus perform exceptionally well and we can happily state that the primary shooter on the device is the best tablet camera we've used to date.

Form & Build
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime - ?, ?, 8.3mm, 586g
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.6 mm, 560g
The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is a good looking device that bears a striking resemblance to other top-tier tablets on the market.
It's slim, minimalist and relatively light at 586g, so you won't have to worry too much about arm ache if you're lugging one around for most of the day.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is another well designed device that follows the design trends set out by Apple with the iPad.
The device is built primarily with plastics and as such is light. But it doesn't quite have the same premium feel of the Asus, which is the only negative that we can think of.

Display
Asus' Eee Pad Transformer Prime boasts a 10.1-inch Super IPS+ LCD touchscreen which operates at a resolution of 1280 x 800 and has a pixel density of 149PPI.
The screen is robust thanks to a liberal scattering of Corning's Gorilla Glass and is both responsive and vivid. Viewing angles are pleasing too, which is something that can make or break such a big-screened mobile device.
Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a 10.1-inch PLS TFT touchscreen which operates at a resoution of 800 x 12800 and has a pixel density of 149PPI, exactly the same as the Transformer Prime.
The similarities don't end there. The Galaxy Tab 10.1's screen is equally as responsive and durable owing to the self-same Gorilla Glass coating, but seems brighter than the Asus, with deep blacks and vivid colours lending a really pleasing quality to the screen.
Winner - Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Power
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is powered by nVidia's Tegra 2 chipset, which consists of a dual-core 1GHz CPU and ULP GeForce GPU, giving the tablet a really nippy feel. Gaming is fast and fun on the device and other labour intensive duties are carried out with equal speed and efficiency.
Samsung has fitted the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 1GB RAM too, which makes for snappy multi-tasking and nice, brisk app opening.
The device comes in 16,32 & 64GB flavours and offers no support for micro SD expansion.
The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is powered by nVidia's Tegra 3 chipset, though, and the 1.3GHz Cortex-A9 quad-core CPU included is tremendously fast, giving the Transformer Prime the edge over any other tablet on the market.
You can try to slow the thing down but we don't think you'll be successful.
The device also boasts ULP GeForce graphics, which are still the best in the business, and also offers 1GB RAM, making it the full package.
The Transformer Prime ships in 32 & 64GB models.
Winner - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime
In spite of its best efforts the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 couldn't best the might of Asus' new device. And that's because the Eee Pad Transformer Prime is a rip-roaring tablet that knocks spots off anything else currently available.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a good tablet though. It's well built, easy on the eye and very powerful. But it's just come up against a device, in the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, that would ably see of anything we threw at it.
